Abstract:
This study focuses on documenting the attitudes of a group of students at a Hispanic Serving Institution, (HSI) in California about code-switching in the media. At the same time the issue of identity is explored regarding the question of code-switching in English and Spanish. Three sections of Spanish for Heritage Speakers and one section of Intermediate Spanish as a Foreign Language were selected. They were shown a commercial where code-switching is observed and a survey was conducted with 100 of these students in order to find out: (1) the perceptions of the participants with respect to this phenomenon and (2) if there is a correlation between this phenomenon and the identity of the heritage speakers. Our hypothesis is that the participants will respond positively to the use of code switching in the commercial and they will identify with it. Such results would indicate that this phenomenon is accepted both among second language and heritage language learners. Moreover, these findings would suggest that code-switching is related to the representation of the identity of heritage language learners as bilinguals in this university.
