The student develops an understanding of the structure of the Spanish language and is able to use an appropriate level of formality according to the situation, whether in writing or in speech.
The student completes between two and six courses (depending on his or her choice of emphasis, as either language and linguistics knowledge or literary and cultural knowledge) related to the Spanish language and linguistics. These courses deal with: the sound system of Spanish, the history of Spanish, advanced grammar, Spanish-English translation, a general introduction to Spanish linguistics, Spanish for professional application (medical, legal, etc. spheres), composition and conversation.
To satisfy this MLO, I took: SPAN 303: Advance Spanish Grammar, and SPAN 305 : Spanish for the Professions. During this classes, I was able to learn to write using the proper verbal tense in Spanish. In SPAN 303, I learned to master the most troublesome these int he Spanish language, the subjective as well as to identify the difference between "ser" and "estar". On my SPAN 305 class, I learned terms related to business in the Hispanic culture as well as the proper etiquette when navigating this specific area. In addition, I learned that one have to take into consideration the culture of the society where one wants to do business because that will help to build strong relationships with the people that one will work with and the people that one is going to provide a service to. To be able to understand this concept, the teacher would give the us scenarios with different cultural contexts. To conclude, I enjoyed the class because I was able to learn new vocabulary related to business in Spanish.
